Conquer Blue Monday With These Eight Helpful Tips:

Today, January 18, 2021 marks the day of Blue Monday. Coincidently, Blue Monday is noted on the third Monday of January every year, which coincides with Martin Luther King Day.

Perhaps it is the remembrance of the King and his fate that bring the final hatchet of blues upon us?

Blue Monday is suppose to be the most depressing day of year.

Why?

In short, people are coming off the holiday high and falling into the finalities of winter until hopes of green pop into bloom.

If you’ve read my blog, Chasing The Winter Blues Away I explain how you can… well, chase the winter blues away. Essentially, Blue Monday is suppose to be the darkest day of your Winter Blues.

How are you feeling today?

Here is a quick guide to chase the Monday Blues away and keep it just another positive winter day (While taking note of honoring Martin Luther King with happy thoughts of the love that filled his heart.)

Here are eight ideas to raise your happy brain chemicals and keep the vibes positive! After all, chasing the blues away takes brain power.

1. Let’s honor Martin Luther King with kindness. Spread a simple act of love or kindness today. Rather it be: donating to your favorite charity, buying the person’s coffee in front of you at Starbucks, holding a door open and biting your tongue if they manage not to say thank you, sending a note of encouragement to someone who might need it… you get the idea? Spread kindness and joy so all can feel loved.

2. Do something special for you. Buy yourself some sushi, get that massage, take a long hot bath, buy that gym membership or opt to adventure on a hike, organize you closet… being kind to you matters and you always deserve some of your own TLC. Loving yourself is important!

3. Conquer a new goal or dream. Have you ever made a dream board? If not, it’s fun. You just take pictures (magazines or printouts from the internet), cut them out and paste them on a poster board. This is to help you visualize all the goals and dreams you wish to complete in future time. It is sort of like a visual bucket list. Take some of these goals and dreams and make them happen. Want to go to Paris? Book it. Been wanting to start that book? Do it. If not today, then when? You only live once. Go after it and get it on the calendar.

4. Get some exercise… or as I prefer to call it, activity. Yes you – get your butt off the couch and go for a walk. A brisk one. Moving your body with some brisk walking, running or cardio boost those happy chemicals – no excuses, bundle up and do it. The faster you move the warmer you stay. Right?

5. Eat less processed. The fresher the better for your brain and body. Food really is mood and when you load up on those bad carbs for an immediate dopamine release – you complain later when you feel fat & bloated. It’s not worth it. Get your carbs today from fruits and veggies and find a new, healthy recipe to try.

6. If the sun just won’t break the clouds today settle (with doctor approval) for some Vitamin D in pill form if your not getting enough in your food. (Don’t grab for additives in things like milk because it’s over processed with added hormones. Instead try grass fed/pasture raised liver, egg yolk, oily fish such as mackerel or salmon.) Vitamin D is proven to boost mood and since our body can’t make it on its own, we often need supplements during the winter. Call your doctor, get approved and visit your local pharmacy.

7. Try something new! Boost the happy chemicals by going out on a limb and trying something new. Rather it be skiing, ice skating, roller skating, yoga or the like… teaching yourself something new is going to boost your winter mood.

8. Reach out to family or a friend(s) and plan a meeting or (to protect from Covid) a new fun zoom chat. Family Feud or Trivia anyone? If you have kids plan game time today. After all, they are off school. Reach for a board game or cards and teach them how to play something new. This won’t only boost your mood but it will boost their moods too!
